What is contrast therapy?
Contrast therapy is the technique of alternating between hot and cold temperatures. It's used in physical therapy, sports medicine and rehabilitation to improve circulation, reduce muscle soreness, and speed up healing — but it's also a powerful way to calm the mind, reduce stress and build resilience.
A typical 60-minute session looks like:
- 20 minutes in the Finnish sauna
- 3 minutes in the ice bath
- 2 minutes air drying
- Repeat 2–4 times

Mental
Contrast therapy is a brilliant way to train your nervous system. The ice bath puts your body under deliberate stress while you stay calm and breathe — which builds genuine resilience to everyday stress. Many people use it specifically to shift state, improve focus and lift mood. Ice baths can elevate dopamine for hours afterwards.

Ice Bath + Finnish Sauna FAQs
What is an ice bath and how does it work?
An ice bath is a form of cold therapy — you immerse your body (up to your neck) in water chilled to between 2 and 4°C. Ours are high-spec with cooling compressor, filtration and sanitisation.
What's the temperature of the ice bath?
Between 2 and 4°C.
What's the temperature of the Finnish sauna?
Between 90 and 110°C — much hotter than our infrared saunas, which is what makes it work so well paired with the ice bath.
How long should I stay in the ice bath?
Start with 1–2 minutes and work up. Rather than counting time, count the "walls" — the moment your mind wants to get out but your body is still safe. We've got guide videos you can watch before your first plunge.
How cold is too cold?
Everyone has a different tolerance. The ice bath should be cold enough that you hit a mental wall, but you can stay in safely without risking your health.
Do I need to prepare before an ice bath?
No specific prep needed, but if you're new it's a good idea to warm up first — 12–20 minutes in the Finnish sauna does the trick. There's also a shower in the room to rinse sweat off before getting into the ice bath.
What should I do after?
Air dry, take a warm shower, head back into the Finnish sauna, or do some light movement. Hydrate, eat something nutritious, and rest — give your body an hour or so to settle before strenuous activity.
What do I need to bring?
Just your swimwear — we provide everything else. Towels, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, moisturiser, hairdryer, filtered water and herbal tea are all included. Comfy clothes for after are a nice touch.
Can I do this with friends?
Yes — the rooms fit up to 4 friends depending on which one you book. $30 per friend, paid at reception or let us know when you book.
What should I wear?
Swimwear. We provide towels, shampoo, conditioner and body wash. There's a shower in every room.
Who shouldn't do this?
Talk to your doctor first if you have:
- Heart conditions
- Pregnancy
- High or low blood pressure
- Raynaud's disease
- Hypothermia or open wounds
- A cold or flu
- Multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's or epilepsy (heat sensitivity)
- Recently consumed alcohol
- Children should not use without medical supervision
How often should I do contrast therapy?
Depends on your goals. Some people go daily, others weekly. Listen to your body and don't overdo cold exposure.
What's the difference between infrared and Finnish sauna?
Finnish saunas heat the air with hot rocks (90–110°C) — intense, invigorating, traditional. Infrared saunas use light to heat you at a cellular level (lower air temperature, gentler) — easier to stay in longer, deeper detox. Finnish is best for contrast therapy because the high heat creates a stronger contrast with the ice bath. More on our infrared saunas →
